seoSEO (Search Engine Optimization)  is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s unpaid results – often referred to as “natural,” “organic,” or “earned” results.

You can of course purchase ads from search engines which will show your web page on the first page of search results for certain keywords. This is not what SEO is about. SEO is about the normal, natural, and unpaid portion of the search results. It attempts to make your website more visible to search engines by paying attention to some details on your own website when the website is being developed.

Search engines rank websites based on certain algorithms, and factors such as the page title, the description of the page, links from other pages to your page, the keywords that are associated with the page content, etc.

You will have to think about many things. The first is traffic to your website. Just because you have a website doesn’t mean it will get visited. Please read our SEO article regarding this topic.

The other is the maintenance of your website. Depending on what type of website you own, you will need a certain amount of maintenance. If yours is just a brochure type website that describes your business and provides people your contact information, it may not need much maintenance. All you need in that case is hosting and a periodic domain registration renewal.

web-designI have designed and operated websites for myself and the people around me since 1999. And I have been doing this for paying clients for several years. But doing this for clients is a completely different experience.

Most clients that I encountered are not educated customers when it comes to web development, and they are not sufficiently familiar with the technical aspect of their project, which is okay of course, even expected, but this creates complications, and its own problems in communicating with the client regarding their project.

One important piece of information I want my clients to be aware of is the difference between website design an web application development. Many people who are not familiar enough with the technial aspect of this field feels they are one and the same thing. They see intelligence built into many websites they use on the web, such as online games, mortage calculators, shopping carts, etc, and they don’t usually realize that designing the layout, and the look and feel of a website is different than adding intelligence behind that website.
