SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

seoSEO (Search Engine Optimization)  is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s unpaid results – often referred to as “natural,” “organic,” or “earned” results.

You can of course purchase ads from search engines which will show your web page on the first page of search results for certain keywords. This is not what SEO is about. SEO is about the normal, natural, and unpaid portion of the search results. It attempts to make your website more visible to search engines by paying attention to some details on your own website when the website is being developed.

Search engines rank websites based on certain algorithms, and factors such as the page title, the description of the page, links from other pages to your page, the keywords that are associated with the page content, etc.

Understanding how those search algorithms work, and taking this into account when developing the website is called search engine optimization.

SEO or no SEO

Many clients who are new to web development have unrealistic expectations from their website. Having a website will not automatically guarantee that they will have a lot traffic to that website, or that they will get significant business from that website.

When you initially place your website on a web server somewhere, it will not have much visibility first, unless you directly go to your website’s url, or you search for the exact url of your website on popular search engines. Any related keywork searches will not bring up your website in the search results in the beginning. It takes time for the search engines to find and index your website and associate it with certain content and certain keywords. And then rank it based on all the criteria they use. Eventually, if the website has useful content, and there are links to it from other pages, it will start ranking higher and higher in the search results. But it takes time.

Some SEO companies promise fast results, and google first page rankings, etc if the client makes the right payment, but the ones that can really deliver on those promises may be using unapproved SEO practices such as artificially creating so many organic looking links (by typically spamming the web), which will generate success only temporarily. The real success takes time and effort, and will not be achieved by trying to fool Google’s search algorithm.

It requires the owner of the website, or the SEO service they hire to work towards a long term goal to promote the website, and at the same time make sure the website has fresh and quality content.

GGWeb Hosting and Consulting also provides SEO services. It is a separate service than the development of the website. Once the website is developed, clients can purchase an SEO service package if they are interested.
